Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology
Ethnology/cultural anthropology as a branch of comparative humanities deals with the study of culture and relations between cultures within the history of the human civilization. The ethnic and cultural processes are studied both from the point of view of historical perspective and contemporary way of life of communities. Apart from collecting and recording documents on varied cultural and social phenomena, ethnology represents also a theoretical and interpretative discipline studying the phenomena and processes in social, ethnic, religious and geographical context. The scientific research specializes in studying cultural traditions and values, their transformations in changing historical context, as well as the phenomena of the modern way of life. At present, the department provides a 3-year Bachelor’s degree (Bc.) and a two-year Master’s degree (Mgr.) course, as well as doctoral study (PhD.) in ethnology. The course ‘museology and cultural heritage’ has been accredited in a Bachelor’s degree (Bc.) of standard 3-year length of study. Graduates will master the methodological approaches of ethnology and cultural anthropology in the courses oriented on the history and theory of humanities, on Slovak and European ethnology, urban, religious, visual, feminist and other subjects within ethnology and cultural anthropology.
