Basic Information

 

The 51st Summer School of Slovak Language and Culture Studia Academica Slovaca (SAS) will be held under the auspices of the Faculty of Philosophy, Comenius University, Bratislava with courses held in Bratislava. Lasting from August 2nd to August 22nd, 2015, the course is aimed at all those studying Slovak language and culture, and at all Slavists in general. This intensive programme is offered especially to university or college professors, experienced teachers, postgraduates and advanced undergraduates of Slovak and Slavonic studies, to writers, translators and all others interested in Slovak language and culture. The aim of the course is to enable students to improve and extend their Slovak language competence, as well as increasing their level of expertise in Slovak literature and culture.

The Summer School SAS is the oldest summer language school in Slovakia (since 1965; since 1966 under the name of "Studia Academica Slovaca"). Every year, around 160 participants from more than 30 different countries study at this academic institution and enjoy benefit of its Slovak studies courses. Those leading the seminars and lectures at SAS are professional teachers and lecturers, experts in teaching Slovak as a foreign language, often experienced in teaching both in Slovakia and abroad.

 

Structure of the Course

    A. Basic Programme:

    • Language courses for beginners (levels A1, A2)

    • Language courses for intermediate and upper-intermediate (levels B1, B2)

    • Language courses and specialized seminars for advanced students aimed at:

      • linguistic interpretation

      • literary interpretation of texts

      • translatological interpretation of texts

      • scientific-methodical training classes for lecturers and teachers (didactics of Slovak as a foreign language)

    • Lectures on language, literature, ethnology, politology, history and other, mainly homeland study disciplines aimed at intermediate and upper-intermediate students (lectures are published in Studia Academica Slovaca proceedings from the corresponding year, which are at disposal already throughout the Summer School)

    • Lectures in foreign languages on Slovak language, culture and realia (aimed especially at participants with lower level of language competence)

    B. Optional Programme:

    • Workshops in language, literature and Slovak culture

    • Presentation of Slovak art (films, art ensembles, exhibitions, concerts etc.);

    • Meetings with Slovak writers, artists and other representatives of Slovak science and culture;

    • Cultural field trip in selected regions of Slovakia (cultural and historical sights, towns, castles, etnographic museums, caves and other natural attractions);

    • Multicultural evening „For Ourselves“ - participants represent their own culture and traditions.

      Evaluation, Certificates and Credits

       

      Participants are divided into individual study groups according to their results reached in the entrance test in Slovak language. All the students who successfully complete the Summer School are awarded the Certificate of Completion. To qualify for the Certificate, students are required to regularly attend and actively participate in the seminars and lectures, they are evaluated continuously throughout the seminars, and need to submit required written work (final test, essay). After attending the programme, participants are offered the opportunity to take a final exam and obtain evaluation and ECTS credits.

      Room and Board

      Summer School takes place in Bratislava - lessons will be held at the Faculty of Philosophy, Comenius University (Bratislava city center, Gondova 2) and the accomodation will be booked in a selected facility close to the university area. All participants with a scholarship from Slovak institutions receive full amount for the tuition fees, accommodation, full board and cultural activities

       

       

      Application Procedure

      A. Scholarship holders of Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of Slovak Republic

      These scholarships are based on international biletaral agreements between countries (you can find the list of countries with such an agreements signed here.)

      For this scholarship, please contact the Slovak Embassy in your country, where you will get all other details about the  application procedure. If you are a student of Slovak language and culture at a university abroad, ask your Slovak lecturer for information.
      The selection procedures are organized by Slovak represenative bodies abroad.

      B. Scholarship holders of Slovak Academic Information Agency (SAIA)

      These scholarships are based on Slovak-Austrian bilateral agreement. You can find more information here.

      C. Scholarship holders of Comenius University

      These scholarships are based on inter-university agreements between Comenius University and other foreign partners. Please check whether such an agreement exists between Comenius University and your home university.

      D. Self-paying participants

      Anyone (at least 18-years old) interested in Slovak language and culture can participate in the programme of Summer School SAS.
