Library science, librarianship, scientific information, ... There are only very few areas of human endeavor that have passed through transformation as rapid as the area of information processing. It took us millenia to shift from papyrus to printed books but it took us only two or three decades to move from kilobytes to terabytes. And our progress toward yottabytes will be even faster. It is exciting to be a part of all of this.

Our department is preparing the future generations of information specialists for managing communication flows, support of knowledge economy and handling the information explosion. We are educating experts on the protection of cultural heritage stored in the historical library collections, manuscripts and old prints. We are growing qualified mediators for processes in literary communication as well as in the electronic networks. From manuscripts to the information architecture trends, from information ecology to research of reader interests. We analyze the past and anticipate the future.

We are the oldest and most prestigious university workplace in its field in Slovakia and the only one to offer education starting with the bachelor level all the way to the master's and doctoral degrees.

The department offers, in line with the requirements of the Bologna process and the new university law (131/2002) bachelor's, master's and doctoral studies in the area 3.2.4 library and information studies.

We currently offer 3 accredited bachelor's programs:

• Information studies,
• History of literary culture,
• Literary communication and libraries,

1 master's program:

• Information studies,

1 doctoral program:

• Library and information science.
