Central European Studies – new bachelor study program taught in English!

 In the 2012/13 academic year the bachelor degree study programme of Central European Studies will open at the Faculty of Philosophy, Comenius University.  The number of students is expected to be 20.

The language of instruction is English. To succeed in the studies, English on the B 2 level of the European reference framework is requested.

Contents and target of the study:

The study programme will offer studies of foreign languages of the Central European area and the cross-cultural studies of the regions of Central Europe in the bachelor degree. The language of instruction is English.

The main target of the studies is to master the languages, as well as social and cultural aspects of the Central European area. The graduates will have mastered at least three languages of the region (with the options of Hungarian, German, Polish, or Slovenian) at the level corresponding with the needs of general communication both in spoken and written form. Training in languages will concentrate on mastering elementary skills in translating and the techniques used in simultaneous and consecutive interpreting. Students will learn how to translate written texts in both translation directions in common communication, how to interpret common speeches in both directions, and how to provide guide services aimed at area studies. During their studies they will master the general competence of area studies, i.e. global knowledge of the issues of cross-cultural communication skills. At the same time students will master the elementary theoretical and methodological knowledge of linguistics and literary science. They will get acquainted with the history and culture of the region of Central Europe.

Career opportunities:

At the job market the graduates will find job opportunities as cultural and educational workers within the lower scale of the state administration organization and self-government, or in cultivating international cultural and economic relations through contacts with foreign clientele. The cross-cultural importance of the educational process will be enhanced by engaging lecturers from the V4 countries.

Entrance examination:

The entrance examination comprising a B2 level English test of the European reference framework will be held in the second half of June 2012.

English language test

In accordance with the Faculty of Philosophy’s admission proceedings rules, all applicants will be admitted without taking an entrance examination in case fewer than, or the same number of applicants as has been stipulated, apply for the study.

The terms for admitting foreign students are identical with the terms applied to citizens of the Slovak Republic with the exception of foreigners – private students in which case the entrance examination may be held in the form of a qualifying exam which will be carried out at the relevant department(s) in accordance with valid entrance examination regulations of the Faculty of Philosophy, Comenius University. The fee for private foreign students is 2, 500 € per one academic year.
