Department of Slovak Literature and Literary Science
Department of Slovak Language and Department of Slovak Literature and Literary Science, both departments participate in the educational programs within the specialization of the Slovak language and Slovak literature. The linguistic part of the program includes the theory of the Slovak language from the descriptive and explanatory points of view, as well as from its structural, social and pragmatic dimensions, basic knowledge of the historic development of the Slovak language and dialects, the development of the standardization of the Slovak language, including the ways and conditions of its functioning, the place of the Slovak language among other Slavic, as well as non-Slavic languages, and their mutual relations.
The literary part of the program comprises the theory of literature, history of the Slovak literature from the early Middle Ages until the present, the relations between Slovak literature and Czech and other European literatures, literary criticism, interpretation of literary texts. The teaching program also includes methodology of teaching Slovak language and literature, which represents an integral part of the course.
It is possible to study Slovak language and literature as specialization in teaching of academic subjects, combined with other languages/subjects. From the academic year 2005/06 the accredited courses in the above mentioned specializations (special, teacher training) are offered on two levels (Bachelor’s, Master’s). Two programs - Slovak language and Slovak literature - are offered in doctoral study.
